Welcome!

Welcome to my little blog! I know that most of you are here from Jenna's blog and are part of her "2nd Annual Commenting Challenge". I'm so excited to have visitors because no one ever reads my blog. It may help if I actually updated the blog once in a while. Also, I love reading other blogs - yes, I waste too much time doing this. Ha ha.

Since most of you do not know me, I thought I'd introduce myself.
My name is Jessica and I live in Northern VA. I am from North Carolina and lived there until I was 22 years old! I met my husband in college and we married 2 months after I graduated. On July 16th we will celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary. Time really does fly! We have two spoiled rotten dogs- Patsy (a Black and Tan Coonhound) and Jacob (a Beagle). They are both rescue dogs from our local animal shelter.

I am a 2nd grade teacher and it really is my dream job. I can't imagine doing anything else. I love to read! My favorite authors are Maurice Sendak, Peggy & Herman Parish, and James Patterson. I love books and even studied Reading & Literacy in Graduate School. One day maybe I'll become a Reading Specialist. I am very girly! I love makeup, hair stuff, jewelry, shopping, purses, and PINK! I was sort of a tomboy growing up so I can't believe that I became a girly girl.

Other things that I love:
*Water-- beach, pool, boating. My parents have a sailboat and it is wonderful to go out on the water and relax. It is so peaceful. If you have never been, go and you'll love it.
*My entire family-- I have a huge family and each person is so special to me
*My friends-- I have the best friends in the world. They're the kind that have to be your friends because they know too much :-),
*Traveling-- In 2 weeks I'm going to Miami and I can't wait! One day I'd love to go to Hawaii. I need to get over my fear of flying at some point I guess.
*North Carolina BBQ and Sweet Tea-- Neither of which you can get in Northern VA. :-(
*Holidays- Happy 4th of July by the way!

I could add so much more to this post but I know there are other blogs you'd like to visit. Feel free to ask any questions and leave comments. I love comments!

Thank you for stopping by!

Beauty Secrets

Well I keep being asked if I've updated the blog. Not sure Beauty Secrets are what people had in mind.

I love reading Kelly's blog every single day. Each Friday is "Show Us Your Life" Day. This week's topic is Beauty Secrets. I have a very simple routine each morning but somehow it takes me an hour to get ready. Well goodness it might take me that long to describe it. Ha ha

Here is more than you ever wanted to know about how I get ready for the day...

Hair--
First, I'm one of those people that has to shower and wash my hair every single day. I have very fine and oily hair. If I don't wash my hair every day, it is just a mess. I haven't found one shampoo and conditioner than I just can't live without. Right now I'm loving BedHead Superstar Shampoo and Conditioner.
Then, I put Bed Head Superstar Blow Dry Lotion and Bed Head Superstar Thickening Spray in my hair and let it dry a little while putting on makeup.

After the makeup, I dry my hair with a big round brush. I'm not coordinated enough to actually curl my hair with this but I try.

Then is the dreaded curling or straightening. This totally depends on my mood but I always do one of these unless it's the weekend. I love the straightener because I don't end up looking like Annie with all the curls. Right now the style I have just doesn't always look great with the straightener so I curl it using a big curling iron. This is what I've done the past few weeks.

Once I've curled or straightened, I spray it like there's no tomorrow. I love the Tigi Cat Walk Work-It Hairspray but I want to try the Freeze It that everyone raves about.

So that's the hair! Now the fun part...makeup!

Makeup-
I LOVE makeup. Does someone see a trend here? I love lots of things. I started selling Mary Kay 2 years ago because I wanted the 50% discount on my makeup. Ha ha.

First off, you have to start with a clean slate. I use Mary Kay 3-in-1 cleanser and moisturizer. For Christmas I got a Clarisonic and it is amazing!! You can use your own cleanser and it makes your skin feel so good. If you don't have one, get one. Yes, I know they're expensive but so worth it!

Then I use Mary Kay Medium Coverage foundation. Yes, there is a new Mary Kay foundation that I can't wait to try but I wanted to use what I had before I switched over. I put on foundation with my fingers because it gets better coverage and I think is quicker.

I then put on Mary Kay Mineral Powder over my foundation. I like this just because it sets my foundation. I can't remember where I heard this but it does work great. I have oily skin so it absorbs some of the oil as well.
For my eyes, I use Mary Kay Eyesicles in Vanilla. Yes, they've discontinued this so I'm going to have to find something new soon. This is a cream shadow and is super easy. I just apply it with my finger and I'm done.

Finally I put on Mary Kay Waterproof Mascara in black/brown.
I finish with Mary Kay Lipstick. I don't use just one shade but I love "Berry Kiss". Sometimes I use a lip pencil first but not always and I can't ever remember what shade I use. The final step is to add the Mary Kay NouriShine Lip Gloss. This might be my favorite part! I love "Pink Diamonds". Yes, of course I would choose pink.

Of course if I have a special occasion, this changes but it is the same most days of the year. Hopefully it all looks alright because I do it every day. Ha ha.

Now if you're still reading, you're amazing! I can't wait to read some other blogs and get new ideas.

Merry Christmas!

It's time for me to post since I haven't done so since July. Not a detailed post now, just a Christmas greeting. This isn't our "official" Christmas card that we sent out but I love this one too.

I'll try to post an actual update soon.

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

I'm Boring and I Know It

Yes, I am a boring blogger. I always think I have nothing to blog about because my life is just so ordinary. Nothing exciting really happens and that is okay with me. But, that leaves me with nothing to blog about.

So, please leave a comment and let me know what you blog about, what I should blog about, or what you want to know about me. Any ideas are appreciated so I can get out of my blogging funk.

Show Us Your Life - FUTURE Children's Names

Disclaimer-- We are NOT expecting a baby!! I'm only participating in "Show Us Your Life" over at Kelly's Korner Blog. Just had to add that in so no one gets too excited. Ha ha!!

I wanted to participate in Kelly's "Show Us Your Life" this week because I love baby names. I love hearing about people's children's names and how they came up with them.

Since Mat and I were dating, we've talked about children. We already have names that we love so when we decide to have kids, we are ready!

Girl Names
*Mackenzie Richmond
I think this is probably our favorite girl name. One of Mat's maternal grandfather's relatives was "McKinley". I love that name but Mat isn't too fond of it so changed it just a little to Mackenzie. Richmond is a family name on Mat's father's side of the family. I think it is such a great southern name and I love having a family name.
*Savannah James
We love the name Savannah for two reasons: 1)Savannah, GA is my favorite city in the world! 2)Back when Mat worked for the YMCA, there was a little girl there named "Savannah". Mat fell in love with the name and I think it is great too. James is Mat's father's middle name. Yes, I love it for a girl!!

Other names I love (not necessarily ones that we have talked a lot about):
*Naomi - this is my middle name and Mat's maternal grandmother's name. For the longest time I hated my middle name. Now that I'm older, I LOVE it!
*Sophie/Sophia- no particular reason I love these names. I just think they're pretty.
*Amelia - my favorite children's book character ("Amelia Bedelia")

Boy Names
*Hamilton Foard
We absolutely love this name! Hamilton is Mat's mom's maiden name. When I worked at a daycare in college, there was a little boy named "Hamilton". I came home that first day and said we had to use that name!! I love using last names as first names. Foard is Mat's middle name and a family name. We've always known that we would use it as a son's middle name.

We better not have more than one son because we can't decide on any other names. Ha ha!
These are some other boy names that I like:
*Max- another favorite children's book character ("Max" in "Where the Wild Things Are"). I also love this name because Mat's dad is "Mac", Mat is "Mat" (duh!), and a son could be "Max".

As you can tell, we like using family names and names that have a lot of meaning for us. Naming a child is such a special part of being a parent and we want to be sure that our children's names are very special and perfect! I can't wait until God blesses us as parents!!

Happy Mother's Day!!

"God could not be everywhere and therefore He made mothers."

Happy Birthday Mat!!

Today is my husband's 28th birthday! Wow, we're getting old!!

There are many things I'd like to thank him for on his special day!

Thank you for...
*Getting up early every morning and taking care of the dogs.
*Overlooking the fact that my shoes and clothes are everywhere in our room.
*Not minding that I'm not a neat freak or cleaning fanatic.
*Doing the dishes all the time.
*Listening to me talk about my students all the time.
*Sticking with me through good times and bad.
*Being with me the past 8 years!
There are many more things but I tend to forget things when I go to type them.

Have a wonderful birthday!!

I LOVE YOU!

The Blizzard of 2010

The snow started Friday afternoon and ended at 5pm on Saturday. We were left with 25 inches! Oh, and we have MORE coming Tuesday and Wednesday!

To show all of the pictures we've taken so far, I created a slideshow. You'll see pictures of the snow as it was coming down, our trip to 7-11, us relaxing during the snowstorm, pictures once it ended, playing in the snow, and my favorite- "Bob the Blob".

20 Questions - Christmas Style

I'm really getting in the mood for Christmas. Maybe it's just that I'm in the mood for Christmas break. Either way, Amanda had this little Christmas survey on her blog and I thought it would be a fun thing to put on my own. Now you'll know what makes me happy at Christmas time.

1. Eggnog or hot chocolate? Hot Chocolate!! Made better with cool whip and chocolate syrup on the top.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just set them under the tree? When I was a little girl, he just sat them under the tree. Now he only puts stuff in my stocking.

3. Colored lights or white? Only white.

4.Do you hang mistletoe? No.

5. When do you decorate for Christmas? After Thanksgiving. I'd love to say I decorate the day after Thanksgiving but seeing as how I just got the tree up two days ago and we still don't have our outside decorations up, that would be a complete lie.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish, excluding dessert? It's not really a dish served only at the holidays but- mashed potatoes.

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? Spending every Christmas Eve at my Granny's house.

8. When and how, did you learn the truth about Santa? I can't remember. I was pretty young though.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? White lights, special ornaments that we've gotten over the years, and some random balls. This year I even added a red sheer ribbon around it. It just adds a special touch.

11. Snow. Love it or hate it? Love it!! Especially when it causes us to have a snow day!

12. Can you ice skate? I've been once and that was when I was in high school. I think I was down on the ice more than I was skating. I'd love to try again though.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? My princess ring (that's the type of ring) from my Aunt Susan. I got it in high school and have worn it ever since.

14. What is the most important thing about the holidays to you? Spending time with family and helping others.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? All of them are so delicious I can't choose a favorite.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Christmas Eve at my Granny's house

17. What tops your tree? A clear star with white lights

18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Giving

19. What is your favorite Christmas song? Carol of the Bells

20. Candy canes. Yuck or yum? Yummy

I tag anyone who reads this to put this on their blog.

Christmas Picture Bloopers

Last night, our friends Erika and Courtney came over to take our pictures for our Christmas Card.

Before they got here, I had already figured out that my hopes for a picture of the two dogs sitting in front of the Christmas tree wasn't going to happen. Have you ever tried to get two dogs sit in front of a Christmas tree and look at you?!

After all was said and done, we did end up with some great pictures for our card. You can expect your's soon! I won't share our "official" pictures with you yet but here are some blooper shots. Enjoy!

Everybody is SO not ready for this picture!

Jacob says "What? You mean I CAN'T be in this picture? That is NOT fair!"

Jacob says "I left the animal shelter for THIS?"

Patsy demanding that her stuffed Beagle be in the picture with her.

We all hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Long Overdue Post

I can't believe I haven't posted since July!! So much has happened since then.

Here is just a short listing of things that have happened:

*I finished graduate school! I'm now a Master of Science with a specialization in Elementary Reading and Literacy. I am definitely enjoying my weekends that are not spent writing papers. I'm so proud that I finished and stuck with it even when I thought I couldn't write another paper.

*I took on a new position at school. I am now a 1st & 2nd grade Multiage teacher. This means that some of my students are 1st graders and some are 2nd graders. I basically teach two curriculums at one time. It requires a lot of differentiation and planning. I love it though! I have an awesome class!

*Our little family is still enjoying our own home. I'm still working on decorating but we have actually unpacked everything and even gotten rid of a ton of stuff. You would not believe how much stuff we had that we just didn't need!

*We are excited about the upcoming Holidays. We both love this time of year! I can't wait to get out all of the Christmas decorations, listen to Christmas music, and spend lots of time with family and friends.

*I saved the best for last! The biggest news in our family is that Mary and Charles got married!! They finally tied the knot last Saturday, November 21st. It was a wonderful day filled with lots of love. They are a wonderful couple and we are so happy for them. I can finally call Charles my brother-in-law and Mary "Mrs. Wise". Here are some pictures from their beautiful wedding day.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'll do my best to update more.

A Whole Bunch of Randomness

I'm really trying to get back into regular blogging - I promise! I'm really enjoying my summer and blogging has been the last thing on my mind. As you may know, Mat and I don't live the most glamorous of lives (which is fine) but I never have much to blog about. Well, today is different! I have a lot to say. Ha ha

First, I don't remember how I got to this blog exactly but please go check it out - Ward 57.
It is a blog created by Liz (who I don't really know but would love to meet) after her husband Dave was injured when he stepped on a land mine in Afghanistan. It tells how he is recovering at Walter Reed (in DC) and how they are doing. When I found this blog today, I sat down for like an hour and couldn't stop reading. Liz and Dave have only been married a year and are now dealing with this. I can't imagine what they are going through and its all because Dave was fighting for OUR freedom. So, show them that you care. Stop by their blog, leave a comment, and remember that there are many other soldiers out there like Dave who need our thoughts, prayers, and thanks.

Now switching directions completely, you have to try this! Go right now, make a bag of popcorn, put it in a ziploc bag, cover it with cinnamon and sugar, and shake it up really good. It is complete awesomeness in a bag! Yeah I think I just made up the word awesomeness. I'm sure that you've probably all made this before but I just did for the first time today. How did I ever live without it?!

Next, I love reading the blog, Jenna's Journey. She hosts "I Don't Wednesdays" in which you list things that you don't do (duh). So, I thought today I would join in on the fun.

*I don't know how I ever lived without cinnamon sugar popcorn. Ha ha.

*I don't have children unless you count my two spoiled rotten dogs.

*I don't like asparagus. My husband and I have this in common.

*I don't eat seafood. When I was a little girl I remember my mom giving me popcorn shrimp and fish sticks but I now hate all seafood. If it swims I just don't want to eat it.

*I don't like snakes, spiders, or bugs.

*I don't drink coffee. I LOVE some of the Frappucinos from Starbucks (Java Chip is my fav) but I don't drink "real" coffee.

*I don't know what I would do without my summers off. Even though I teach summer school, I love my summers!! How do people work at jobs when they have to work during the summer? Ha ha.

Well, I hope you enjoyed "I Don't Wednesday".

Jenna’s Journey Blog

Thanks for stopping by and come back soon!

P.S.- How many people have known that "Little" on my blog header is mispelled?! I've had it up for months and I just now realized it. I guess I have to tell Faith (the lady that created my blog design) to fix it because I surely don't know how.

Happy Anniversary to Us!

Mat and I are celebrating our 4th Anniversary today. I can't believe how fast the time has gone by and how much our lives have changed in just 4 years.

Here are some pictures of us. Unfortunately I don't have any of our official wedding portraits on my computer. At least you get an idea of what we looked like on that day.
